The Insider’s Guide to Sri Lanka

Authentic advice, local secrets, and how to travel the island like a pro.

Welcome to the Pearl

Sri Lanka is a land of contrasts. It is a place where wild elephants cross highways and ancient temples sit next to modern cafes. But let’s be honest: navigating a new culture can be tricky. The traffic is chaotic, the customs are specific, and the best experiences are often hidden off Google Maps.

This guide is designed to help you navigate the island safely. Whether you are backpacking or looking for luxury, here is what you need to know.

Transport Reality Check

The Trains

  • The Good: The Kandy to Ella train is world-famous for its views.

  • The Reality: Tickets sell out weeks in advance. Third class is often packed like a sardine can.

The Buses

  • The Good: Extremely cheap.

  • The Reality: Sri Lankan buses are known for loud music and very fast driving. They are not recommended for long distances if you value comfort or safety.

Private Drivers (The Best Option)

  • Why it works: Sri Lankan roads are narrow and winding. Distance is measured in hours, not kilometers (100km can take 3.5 hours).

  • The Benefit: Hiring a private car with a Chauffeur Guide gives you the freedom to stop for a king coconut whenever you want.

Eat Like a Local (Safely)

The Rice & Curry

  • Don’t just order “curry.” In Sri Lanka, you get 4-6 different vegetable dishes with your rice. It is often spicy!

Street Food & Water

  • Rule #1: Never drink tap water.

  • Rule #2: Be careful with “short eats” (pastries) from roadside carts if they look cold.

  • 💡 Serendip Tip: Finding safe, authentic street food is an art. Our guides know exactly which “Hoppers” stands are clean and trusted by locals, so you can taste the real Sri Lanka without the tummy ache.

Money Matters & The "Tourist Price"

  • The Currency

    • Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Always carry small notes (100s and 500s) for tips.

    The “Tourist Price”

    • In markets and tuk-tuks, foreigners are often quoted 2x or 3x the local price.

    • Bargaining: It is expected in markets. Start at 50% of the quoted price and meet in the middle.

Respecting the Island

  • Temple Rules

    • Cover your shoulders and knees. White clothing is preferred but not mandatory.

    • The Buddha Statue Rule: Never turn your back to a Buddha statue for a selfie. It is considered extremely disrespectful.

    Photography

    • Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially stilt fishermen or tea pluckers (some may ask for money).

    • 💡 Serendip Tip: Navigating these cultural nuances can be stressful. Our guides will gently brief you before entering any site, ensuring you feel confident and respectful.

The Weather Puzzle

  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons affecting different sides of the island at different times.

    • West & South (Colombo, Galle): Best from December to April.

    • East Coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee): Best from May to September.

    • The Confusion: It can be sunny in Galle and raining in Trinco on the same day.

Safety & Scams to Avoid

  • The “Helper” Scam

    • Be wary of overly friendly strangers near tourist sites offering to “show you a shortcut” or saying the temple is “closed for lunch.”

    • Beach Boys: On the coast, touts can be pushy trying to sell boat rides or herbal oils.

Essential Sinhala Phrases

  • Ayubowan: Hello (May you live long)

  • Istuh-thi: Thank you

  • Hari Hari: OK / Fine

  • Epa: I don’t want (Very useful for sellers!)

Really helpful local tour company

Azeez was super helpful first of all on Reddit, and then even more helpful on email/whatsapp and in real life, sorting out Olindu as our driver for a 10 day tour. Olindu was super-safe and the whole team kept checking in regularly to help us plan what to do next/en route to our next stop. And to introduce us to great local guides too. Great to tour round Sri Lanka with a local company who clearly love showing their amazing country off!

Fantastic and inexpensive tour company

Serendip took care of my trip to Sri Lanka perfectly, and for hundreds less than any other option I had found. The driver, Olindu, was so funny and fun to hang out with. We also were in constant communication with Aziz to ensure things were running smoothly and any changes we made to our plans didn’t negatively impact our trip. We could make a change the day of and they rolled with it, which was hugely helpful.
If you plan to travel to Sri Lanka, I would recommend Serendip 110%

Amazing Company

Serendip Trails were amazing when handling our trip to Sri Lanka. They were helpful when creating a loose itinerary that allowed for any changes we wanted to make while there and helping with ideas of places to see, where to eat, and things to do. We had an amazing time with our driver, Olindu and Aziz was just a simple WhatsApp message away. They made our trip easy and fun. I highly recommend this company!
