The Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail

Sri Lanka’s history is not hidden in museums; it is carved into the living rock of the island. The Heritage Trail is a journey into the heart of one of the world's oldest civilizations. This is not just about visiting ruins. It is about standing atop the Sigiriya rock fortress and imagining the mind of the king who built a palace in the clouds. It is about cycling through the lost city of Polonnaruwa at twilight, where ancient stupas glow in the fading sun. It is about understanding a hydraulic engineering marvel that rivals the Roman Empire. We take you beyond the guidebooks. Our expert cultural guides unravel the legends, the politics, and the spiritual depth of the Cultural Triangle. We visit the icons, but we do so at the right time when the heat lifts and the crowds disperse allowing you to feel the presence of the past.

FAQ’s about The Heritage Trail

Have more questions? Contact us.

Is there a strict dress code?
Yes. These are active spiritual sites, not just tourist attractions. When entering any temple or sacred area, you must cover your shoulders and knees. We recommend carrying a light sarong or scarf in your bag that you can easily wrap around yourself. Hats and shoes must also be removed.
How difficult is the climb at Sigiriya?
Sigiriya involves approximately 1,200 steps. It is a moderate climb that takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top. It is manageable for most people with average fitness. However, if you have knee problems or vertigo, we can offer a beautiful alternative: the view from the base gardens or the easier climb at Pidurangala Rock.
Can I take photos of everything?
Mostly, yes. However, there is one strict rule: Never turn your back to a Buddha statue to take a selfie. It is considered extremely disrespectful. You can photograph the statue, but stand to the side or face it. Our guides will remind you of this to ensure no offense is caused.
Is this trail suitable for children?
Heritage sites can be fascinating for kids, especially exploring the "Indiana Jones" style ruins of Polonnaruwa (which is great to do by bicycle!). However, the heat and walking can be tiring for toddlers. We recommend it for children aged 6+ who can enjoy the stories and the adventure.
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
As a full-service agency, we handle all the ticketing for you. You don't need to stand in line at the counters; we ensure your entry is seamless so you can focus on the experience.
